The discovery of this exotic flower painting presents a rare glimpse into O’Conor’s sojourn in Rochefort-en-Terre between mid-1895 and January 1899. During the preceding years in Pont-Aven, he had developed a friendship with Gauguin and a close relationship with Armand Seguin and Cuno Amiet. However, Gauguin left Brittany in December 1994 and sailed for the South Seas in the following June, after which the Pont-Aven group gradually drifted apart. O’Conor retreated inland to Rochefort-en-Terre where, in isolation, he set his brushes aside and spent the next year or so reading and reflecting on his career before Seguin reignited his desire to paint. O’Conor found Rochefort’s landscape a little bleak in comparison to Pont-Aven and the picturesque Breton coast he had left behind and concentrated on figurative and still life painting. The solitude in which he now worked allowed his own distinctive style to mature. His exaggerated zebrist striping gave way to a more sophisticated technique incorporating broad diagonal bands of colour, which no longer dominated the composition. This renaissance led to some of his best work and set the stage for the remainder of his career. Nevertheless, his passion for vibrant colour never waned, which is apparent in the current work. The exotic combination if rich reds, pinks and yellows are made all the more radiant by enclosing them in a subdued border of carnations set against a striped background of crimsons, browns and greens. The flowers are arranged in a large Breton faience bowl, set on a table draped in an off-white cloth striped with pinks and yellows and finely painted folds and shadows. The flowers suggest a date between June and September.
